On 13th September I attended the “Sillysports” session organised by the committee as it was the WI sports week. They were initially surprised as they thought no one would turn up but about 20 of us braved it in fear and trembling at what we might be asked to do. There was a complete range of silly games provided, ranging from three legged, or egg (potato) and spoon races to more sedentary pursuits such as catching a wooden ball in a cup, sucking up peas with a straw or knitting wearing an apron and woolly gloves. We also all had a go at hula hooping with very limited success which caused great hilarity in the audience. After a welcome cup of tea and delicious cake the event culminated in an obstacle course combining the races and skills that we had been practising. The undisputed winner being Maureen H., generating great speed across the floor with her potato on a spoon and balancing a bean bag on her head and catching a ball in the cup – definitely a candidate for the Tokyo Olympics. Everyone, regardless of age, mobility or self-consciousness took part and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to the committee for their efforts to entertain us and I hope it becomes an annual event.
